Monrovia (AFP) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf overnight Wednesday declared a state of emergency in Liberia due to the deadly Ebola outbreak, warning that extraordinary measures are needed "for the very survival of our state".

Cotonou (AFP) - Benin said Thursday that it has placed two patients with Ebola-like symptoms in isolation and was waiting for test results to establish if the pair were infected with the deadly tropical disease.

Deputy chief of staff at the health ministry, Moufalilou Aboubakar, told journalists that the two patients were being treated as suspected cases of Ebola and that blood samples had been sent to foreign labs for conclusive results.

Liberia apologises to Nigeria over Ebola spread

The Liberian Government on Thursday apologised to Nigeria over the importation of the deadly Ebola Virus by a Liberian-born American, Patrick Sawyer.

Sawyer arrived Lagos on July 20 from Lome but died five days after he was admitted into a hospital in Obalende when he showed Ebola virus symptons.

Ouagadougou (AFP) - The wreckage of an Air Algerie plane missing since early Thursday with 116 people on board has been found in Mali near the Burkina Faso border, an army coordinator in Ouagadougou said.

"We have found the Algerian plane. The wreck has been located ... 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the Burkina Faso border" in the Malian region of Gossi, said General Gilbert Diendiere of the Burkina Faso army.

Lagos (AFP) - A bomb exploded in a crowded shopping centre in Nigeria's capital Abuja on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people in a city already gripped by fear after a series of deadly attacks by Boko Haram Islamists, police and the government said.

Two explosions occurred in Apapa, Lagos on Wednesday night, with sources claiming that five persons died while many were injured.

Sources told our correspondent that the explosions occurred almost at the same time, with the first at the entrance to the Folawiyo tank farm and the other inside the facility.

Delegates at the national conference were told on Tuesday that there were more than 752 Nigerians languishing in British jails.

Apart from this, they were also informed that about 700 Nigerians are also currently serving various jail terms in China; 500 in India and 96 in Indonesia out of which 23 had been on death row.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Matters, headed by a former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, stated this in its report, which was presented to the conference.

The committee stated this while discussing on whether Nigerians prisoners serving outside the country could be repatriated home to complete their jail terms.
