Christina Aguilera's fiancé, Matthew Rutler planned Valentine's Day proposal for over a year and designed the ring himself
Christina Aguilera's fiance was planning his Valentine's Day proposal for over a year.
The Voice judge took to Twitter to share a picture of her engagement ring after Matthew Rutler popped the question on February 14 following three years of dating and the work he put in to ensuring he got a positive response has now been revealed. The production assistant chose nine multi-coloured gemstones to represent the different aspects of their courtship, with a source telling People.com: 'Matt spent over a year designing the ring with the ring designer to represent their three-year journey together as a couple.
'He has been planning this for a while and was just waiting for the right time — the ring has been done for months. Every single placement of each stone has a reason and meaning.'
'There are nine special multi-colour gemstones that you cannot see. They all symbolise something meaningful to the couple.
'Christina is very spiritual and having the stones touch her actual skin will emit positive energies surrounding her at all times. They represent things like love, protection and healing.'
And Matthew even took two of Christina's favourite rings and created a design incorporating both in order to depict 'both their lives coming together as one (sic)'.
Posting a picture of their hands, with a huge ring visible on her finger, Christina wrote: 'He asked and I said yes...' Ironically the proposal came exactly three years after her divorce from first husband Jordan Bratman was finalised.
A source told People: 'They're very much in love and are really excited to take this next step!'
Christina and Matthew met on the set of 2010 movie Burlesque, in which she starred with Cher and he was a film assistant, while she and first husband Jordan Bratman were going through a painful split.
After her relationship with Jordan ended in October 2010, she and Matthew started dating in November of the same year.
They currently live together in her palatial Mulholland Estates home in Los Angeles which she bought for $10 million last year.
Her divorce from Jordan was finalised on Valentine's Day 2011 and she spent the day with Matthew.
Christina and Jordan share custody of their six-year-old son Max.
The former couple met in 2002 when Bratman was working at Azoff Music Management, which is Aguilera's management company.
They had a sunset wedding in a tent near a forest in November 2005 at Staglin Family Vineyard in northern California's Napa Valley.
