The House of Representatives has dismissed reports of a plot, being hatched by the presidency in conjunction with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remove the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, by bribing lawmakers.
House Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity, Hon. Zakari Mohammed (APC, Kwara), told THISDAY in a telephone interview that the issue was a mere rumour.

Some newspapers and online media had reported, citing sources that the PDP and the presidency had resorted to subterfuge and cash to remove Tambuwal, who is seen as supporting the opposition.

The report had claimed that each lawmaker was allegedly given $25,000 in the first instance and with a promise that more would be given after the removal of the speaker.

But Mohammed said nobody could influence the removal of Tambuwal, stressing that neither PDP nor the presidency would succeed in engineering such a process.

He said: "All of these are rumours. They are mere rumours. Nobody has the powers to choose or remove speaker except the 360 members of the House. So, no matter what (Bamanga) Tukur or anybody will do will change this fact. And none of them has any right to vote in that regard.

"Of course, you know how we started in the House. We chose our speaker against all odds and we still stand by him through thick and thin."
