Funke Akindele partners Rotary against polio

Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, will join members of Rotary Club, Nigeria, to raise awareness on total eradication of polio by 2014.
Rotary has introduced a Bike-A-Thon programme in collaboration with Cycology, a cycling club, as platform to achieve this goal.

Addressing newsmen at an event to unveil Akindele as a polio ambassador in Lagos, the Chairman, Rotary Committee on Polio, Dr. Funsho Olatunji, explained that the Bike-A-Thon is a one-day programme designed to mark the World Polio Day, which comes up on October 24.

Olatunji said the programme would involve registered riders cycling round Lagos, led by Akindele and other celebrities.

He said, “The one-day programme is a fun cycling ride designed to generate interest, increase awareness and raise funds for activities towards the total eradication of polio disease, which is endemic in Nigeria, especially in the north.

“Rotary club has committed itself to joining forces with others to champion the war against polio. The aim of bringing celebrities on board is to leverage on their brands to get the attention of members of the public.

“It will also strive to raise $500m to support Rotary’s global effort in this direction. The programme will also feature cycling stunts, colourful displays and other physical demonstrations.”

In her response after being presented to the audience as polio ambassador, Akindele pledged her commitment to seeing to the total eradication of the killer disease.
